Hinged wardrobes
[Photo: hinged wardrobe with panelled doors]
There is a reason hinged wardrobes have never gone out of style. Open the doors and you see everything at once, from the top shelf to the shoes on the floor. Close them and you have a piece that looks like proper furniture, with door panels, mouldings and handles that set the tone of the whole room.
We design and hand-make bespoke hinged wardrobes to fit your room precisely, whether that is a full wall of storage in a main bedroom, a pair of wardrobes either side of a chimney breast, or a run that meets a sloping ceiling. The interior is planned around your clothes, and the doors are chosen from an extensive range of styles, colours and finishes, with handles to match.
Hinged doors need room to swing open, so they are best suited to medium and larger bedrooms. If your room is tighter, we will tell you honestly, and our sliding wardrobes offer the same quality without the clearance. Many customers combine both.
Every wardrobe is made in our Dorking workshop and fitted by our own team. Come and see door samples at our showroom, where there is ample free parking, or we can bring the options to you at a home visit anywhere in Surrey and Sussex.

Benefits
[Photo: hinged wardrobe in a period bedroom]
01
If your home has a traditional character, hinged wardrobes fit right in. Framed door styles, mouldings and cornices can be chosen to sit naturally alongside original features, so the wardrobe looks like it belongs to the house.
02
Despite their classic roots, hinged wardrobes work beautifully in new builds and contemporary rooms. Flat doors in Super Matt or High Gloss, with slim modern handles, give a clean, crisp finish.
03
Open both doors and the whole interior is in view. That makes it easier to keep organised, quicker to find what you need, and simpler to get bulky items in and out.
04
Because every wardrobe is made to measure, hinged designs can be built around sloping ceilings, awkward angles and alcoves. Doors can even be angled to follow a ceiling line. See our made-to-measure wardrobes for more on awkward spaces.
05
Each hinged door has a practical width limit of around 600mm, as wider doors strain the hinges. On a long wall that simply means more doors, which suits the traditional panelled look many people want from hinged wardrobes.

Matching furniture
Hinged wardrobes pair naturally with matching furniture, because the same door styles and colours can be used on drawers and cabinets. Past projects include hinged wardrobes with a built-in chest of drawers and TV area, open-ended units, and full fitted bedrooms with matching worktops. Reviews
“I need some replacement sliding doors for a built in wardrobe in a flat in Guildford. I contacted a number of companies; Sliding Wardrobe Warehouse were outstanding in terms of response and quality of work. No problems at all; highly recommended.”

“We went to the showrooms in Dorking where we had a warm welcome from Mark who gave us all the information we needed on the Shaker style doors that we wanted. On the day of the installation the fitter, also called Mark, did a very professional job and cleared away afterwards.”

They can be, but sliding doors are usually more practical in small rooms. Hinged doors need space in front of the wardrobe to swing open, so in a tight bedroom we often recommend sliding doors instead, or a mix of the two.
Our made-to-measure hinged doors can be up to 2.5m tall, and we can add cornices or infill panels to take the wardrobe right up to a higher ceiling.
Each hinged door has a practical maximum width of around 600mm, because wider doors put too much strain on the hinges. Longer runs simply use more doors.
Yes. Soft-close hinges are fitted as standard, so doors close quietly and gently every time.
Yes. Every style in our range can be made with glazed options, and we can fit mirrors to the inside or outside of doors. All our glass and mirrors comply with BS 6206 safety requirements.
Generally, yes. Hinged doors usually use more wood and take longer to fit precisely, so they tend to cost more than sliding doors of a similar size. Every wardrobe is quoted individually after we have measured your room.
Yes. Handles are part of the design, and we offer a range of styles and finishes, from traditional knobs and bow handles in brushed nickel or bronze to slim modern bar handles. We can show you options at the showroom.
A front frame wardrobe is built into the opening and uses your walls, floor and ceiling as part of the structure, which gives the most storage. A full carcass wardrobe has its own sides, back, base and lid, which suits rooms where you want a fully lined interior or freestanding sections. We will recommend the right option at your survey.
Yes. Framed and panelled door styles, cornices and traditional handles can be chosen to complement original features, so your wardrobe feels part of the house.
